Though I am not an authority on reviewing any kind of book but here goes my thoughts on what I felt after reading the lost symbol or any of dan brown's collections.

1. One Male Expert (eg. Symbologist Mr Langdon)
2. One female character in which the male expert has muted interest
3. One Good guy which ultimately turns out to be the bad guy
4. One Bad guy which ultimately turns out to be the good guy
5. One super strong guy on a killing spree
6. One all knowing onmi present secret society
7. A great funnel of plots,sub plots, flashbacks and future flashes which converges to a very disappointing end

Voila you have a international bestseller with millions of copies sold...
